Special Note - Melitta One - older models using 55mm Pod design
Please read addendum at bottom of page --- it provides information on how to
obtain a
"universal" pod holder for the older machines from Melitta.
Several of our customers are using the BREW-YET Coffee Disc Maker with their Melitta One Coffee
Makers.
Here is some information about the Melitta One we would like to make our
customers aware of:
The Melitta One utilizes a "55mm Pod design".
The majority of the Single Serve Coffee machines on the market that utilize "pods" - use a 62mm Pod Design.
While the BREW-YET Coffee Disc Maker makes discs that are sized primarily
for 62mm Coffee machines - such as the Senseo and later Melitta machines, the
Disc is easily formed to fit the 55mm pod holders of the Melitta One and
others.
Start to make the Disc as you normally would BUT remember that if you are
making the Disc for a Coffee Machine that uses a single 55mm Pod (such as the
Melitta One) - you will want to make a Single Disc which means using 1
Tablespoon (1 TBS) of coffee - see note below.
Folding of the filter is best done as follows -
Your first fold should be along the inside edge of ring (right where the
coffee, filter and ring meet).
You second fold should start from the point where the first fold met the
ring and be folded towards the center of the ring.
Continue folding the filter towards the center of the ring -we like to
use 8 to 9 folds to go around the entire Disc. This creates a nicely
shaped outer ring for the Disc - without protruding edges.
To use the Coffee Discs produced by the BREW-YET Coffee Disc Maker in a Melitta One machine -
all you need to do is the same thing that one does with 62MM commercial pods -
slightly squeeze the Disc around the diameter to help it fit into the pod holder. The easiest way to "squeeze" the Disc is after forming to place the Disc between your thumb and fore finger with one hand - then place your other hand around the outside diameter of the Disc and "squeeze" the Disc
a couple of times to reduce the diameter. It may take a couple of tries but you will get the knack of this pretty quickly.
Place the Disc into the 55mm Pod holder - then pre-wet the Disc (pre-wetting
of Pods is recommended by many of the Machine manufactures), this does several
good things but for our purposes, it helps to hold the filter in place while
putting the Pod holder back into the Coffee Machine.
Make sure that NONE of the Disc extends into the upper ring surface of the
Pod holder. It is this surface that mates with a matching surface inside
the machine head that seals while the water is expressed through the
Disc. If you accidentally do get part of the filter in this area the
machine will tend to leak (just as it does with incorrectly positioned pods).
This is a picture of a Senseo Pod holder but it gives you a visual idea of the
area to keep clear.
Note - please be sure that you use the pod holder that is compatible with the size pods that you are making. The older Melitta One machines came with two pod holders - one for coffee, one for tea.
The Melitta One instructions manual indicates that you should use a single pod to make coffee.
With the BREW-YET Coffee Disc Maker - this means that you should produce a single sized Coffee Disc. This is produced by placing ONE TABLESPOON
(1TBS) of coffee into the Disc maker - then making the Disc.
Addendum -
A Special Note for our customers who have an
older Melitta One machine
Melitta offers a replacement "universal pod holder" for your
Melitta One.
At BREW-YET™, we have an older
Melitta One with a 55mm Pod holder. We wrote a note to Melitta at Consumer Relations
( consumerrelations@melitta.com
) indicating that we had an older machine and had heard that they were
providing a replacement that would 'allow' the use of 62mm Pods. They
wrote back and indicated that they indeed have a "universal pod
holder" and that if we would send them the mailing information - they
would provide one. They also provided the following contact
information if we wanted to call Customer Service directly.

We received the "universal pod holder"
promptly from Melitta - it has a slightly deeper depth and a slightly
increased interior diameter. In our testing, we made Discs that fit
the unit (and worked well) with the procedure described above.
